Biography:

Dr. Eleftherios (Lefteris) Iakovou is the Director of Manufacturing and Logistics Innovation Initiatives at the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) and a Professor and TEES Research Professor at the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution at Texas A&M University.

Up to August 31st, 2015, he served as the Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the leading Mechanical Engineering Department of Greece, while he further founded and served as its Director, the Laboratory of Logistics and Advanced Supply Chain Management.

In 1992 he joined the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, where he served first as an Assistant and then as a tenured Associate Professor. At UM, Dr. Iakovou spearheaded the development of numerous very successful off-campus educational programs, while he further founded the Perry Ellis Logistics Institute and the Center for Advanced Supply Chain Management.

Prof. Iakovou has published extensively, having more than 180 papers in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings, as well as two (2) books. He is a well-sought keynote speaker for a plethora of national and international events, while he has been consulting extensively for a number of governmental and corporate organizations (including Fortune 500 companies) both in the U.S. and in the EU (including the European Commission), for more than two decades. Effective January 1st, 2016 Dr. Iakovou sits at the Editorial Board of Maritime Economics and Logistics.

For more than ten years, he has served as the President of the Greek Association of Supply Chain Management and has worked extensively on advising the Greek Government for successfully establishing logistics as a pivotal growth sector for boosting national competitiveness and for attracting FDI.

Dr. Iakovou served as the President of the Board of Directors of the Alexandrian Innovation Zone S.A. from July 2010 to July 2013 and as its CEO from November 2012 till July 2013. Under this capacity, he developed strategy and the business plan for the public entity, he managed the entire innovation entrepreneurship ecosystem of the greater region, and he worked extensively with the Greek Government, contributing to national policy-making, presenting to the Hellenic Parliament and drafting national legislation regarding the promotion of innovation in the Greece.

Prof. Iakovou has served as a member of the National Committee on Logistics of the Hellenic Ministry of Transport and Communications, and as a member of the Advisory Committee of EUREKA (Brussels, Belgium), the pan-European network for market-oriented, industrial innovation and R&D. Finally, he led an elite European-wide consortium as the Coordinator of Green-Agrichains, a four-year state-of-the-art research project (2012-2015) awarded by the European Commission on the design and management of sustainable supply chains for the agri-food sector.
