Q-Drops

  1. A maximum of three Q-Drops may be approved during a student's academic career with the tally beginning Fall '91 regardless of possible change of majors afterward. Q's which may be approved in KINE, ROTC and one-hour courses, except in geosciences and science courses, will not be included in the tally of a maximum of three. If a lab is approved for Q-drop simultaneously with its corresponding theory class, only one Q will be counted. If they are dropped at different times two Q's will be counted.
  2. Students are expected to continue attending class until they know that a Q-drop request has been approved at department level (in which the student is majoring).
  3. Q-drops normally should not be requested unless a personal emergency arises or there are other significant conditions essentially beyond the student's control. Following are considerations concerning Q-drops.
    • At registration time, courses should be selected very carefully to avoid the need to Q-drop. Consideration should be given to such factors as need or possible need to work, prerequisites, total hours of registration for the semester, probable ability to cope with specific course content, and assigned professors.
    • Students are expected to be responsible enough to complete tasks which are undertaken.
    • Students are expected to be financially responsible. A course which is Q-dropped after the twelfth class day must be paid for again by the student or whoever is paying the fees, as well as by the taxpayers of the State of Texas (they pay more of the costs of the student's education that the student pays).
    • When a class is initially full, subsequent Q-drops (which may reduce the number of students in the class below the number which could be accommodated), in essence, prevent other students from being able to register for the course that semester.
  4. Q-drops will not be approved
    • To merely help a student meet the terms of probation.
    • If the Q-drop will reduce the course load to less than twelve hours, unless some other factor(s) beyond the student's control obviously justify the less than full-time status. Such factor(s) must be documented in writing and attached to the request form.
    • When the same course for which the Q-drop is being requested has previously been Q-dropped or taken and a grade of F, WF or D has been assigned.
  5. Procedure for seeking a Q-drop
    • Only when it is believed that a Q-drop can be justified, the departmental "Request to Drop a Course(s)" form should be completed by the student and submitted to the student's advisor.
    • The student should return to the Department office prior to the end of the Q-drop period to determine if the Q-drop request has been finally approved. In the meantime, it is extremely important that the student continue attending the class(s) for which drop action has been requested.
